In just a fraction of a second, everything changed when my daughter was born.

Here she was: my everything, my purpose, the reason I am.

Every mother can relate to this transformation — the moment of becoming, of giving life, nurturing, and loving unconditionally.

In the weeks following the birth of my child, I realized for the first time just how fleeting life is. I yearned to be close to my child, even as I held her in my arms, feeling her warmth against my chest, listening to her soft breathing.

I began photographing her every day, hoping I could one day travel back to these moments, reliving the journey we had begun together. Years passed, with thousands of photos taken, when my children made me realize that I belonged in the picture, too, by asking, “Where have you been, Mama?”

I hired a photographer and received emotionless, staged images. The photos felt perfect but empty. There was no connection, no soul, nothing of the beauty I knew to be true.

I knew that if I wanted photos to remind me of that warm, sticky feeling when my toddler wrapped his tiny hand around my fingers, the way sunlight danced in my daughter’s golden strands, and the trust in my baby’s eyes as they lay in my arms, safe and loved, I had to change my approach and capture more than the mere appearance of us.
